For the impact mesh I used Mandelbulb 3D and refined it in ZBrush (smoothing + match to the sphere). Then I added the texture and some x-particles in Cinema 4D and rendered via Octane.
It was a test project combining these tools and to see where the limitations of that workflow are. All in all I think you can get a pretty good starting point with MB3D and it's more a kind of a self-inspiring workflow.
